A family, a hillside, and 25 years of patience.
The story of how one terraced plot in the hills of Himachal & Garhwal became Maa Bhagwati Organic Farm.
It started with one question: why does everything taste different here?
In the late 1990s, our grandfather noticed that the vegetables grown on his small terraced plot tasted nothing like what was arriving in the markets below. No sprays, no synthetic feed — just soil that had never seen a chemical, worked the way his father had taught him. What began as a single family's kitchen garden slowly grew, terrace by terrace, into the farm it is today. The methods never really changed. Only the number of hands helping did.
Twenty-five years, one hillside at a time.
A single terraced plot
Our grandfather begins farming a small hillside plot without any synthetic fertilisers or pesticides — a personal choice more than a business one.
The family joins in
As word spread through nearby villages, more terraces came under organic cultivation, tended by the wider family across two hillsides.
Composting & rainwater harvesting
We formalised natural composting and built small rainwater channels to reduce dependence on the monsoon alone.
Third generation takes over the terraces
The grandchildren return to the farm, blending the old methods with better record-keeping and seed selection.
Maa Bhagwati Organic Farm, formally
What was always known by name in the village finally gets a gate sign — and a way for people beyond the hills to know our story.
The principles that haven't changed in 25 years.
Zero chemicals
No synthetic pesticides or fertilisers — ever. Just compost, patience and healthy soil.
Traditional methods
Terrace farming techniques passed down through generations of hill farmers.
Soil first
We feed the soil, not just the crop — building richness that lasts for seasons.
Sustainable by nature
Rainwater harvesting and natural composting keep our footprint as light as the mountain air.
